DSS Chrispin
The ensuing years saw more and larger Deep Space Ships launched and additional colonies established. Humans were expanding into the galaxy. Peace was maintained throughout this expansion. The Confederacy maintained armed war ships however their function was more police than war. No major outbreaks of hostility had broken out since the Ceres Incidents of 2265. While there were disagreements, the Confederation Space Force (CSF) was able to mediate peaceful solutions.

This expansion was to nearby star systems, however the dreamers looked to the far stars. Two schools of thought arose as to exploring the far reaches of the galaxy. One wanted to build a mighty exploration ship with massive armament to be able to meet what ever they might encounter. The other school wanted a large scientific ship without arms to demonstrate that humans were peaceful. After all there had not been any wars in the Confederation for almost two hundred years. The "armed ship" school pointed out that other races, if they existed, might not be so peaceful.

In the end it was agreed that two of a new class ship, the Andromeda Class, would be built. The Chrispin would be first and would be an unarmed science ship. The second would be the Androcles which would carry a smaller scientific compliment and heavy weapons. Both would have the latest and most powerful
engines and defensive shields.

The Chrispin was sponsored jointly by the UCS, Purdue University,  & Princeton University. While the Chrispin would carry no weapons, it would be designed so that it could be retrofitted with weapons if that were ever needed. In the meantime it would depend on being able
to make peaceful contact with any alien race, and if necessary use its shields and speed to escape.

The Chrispin is the first Deep Space Ship of the Andromeda Class. It is designed so that it can land on planets with up to 1.6 Earth normal. The landing structure consists of four longitudinal re-enforced struts on the main body and rear nacelles and two re-enforced pads on the forward nacelles. Because of its size and the general lack of landing facilities to handle a ship of this size, it is very dangerous to do. As of this writing. it has not rested on a planet since it was launched October 25,  2470. At that time it was lifted from Earth to be finished in space. It was commissioned in space July 20, 2471.
