When a ship is underway using the MacPherson drive, communication must have additional buffering and be phased with the drive switching rate. This requires phase locking between the two communication devices. Computers control this buffering and phasing.
Since it is a remote possibility that two ships operating exactly in sync would not be able to communicate, drives normally undergo a transition delay of random length every 5 seconds. Although the delay is very minute, it does insure that all ship drives will eventually be out of sync. Once a recognition signal is received indicating a communication attempt, the communication equipment will control the drive switching until the communication is terminated.
Personal communicators use the same principle although the range is limited and the drive phasing must be handled by the mother ship. The recognition signal of these devices identify them as personal communicators. Miniature Ytterbium generators power these devices.
In the late 2200s, a series of discoveries led to the development of the Molecular Phased Field (MPF) devices. The MPF allowed the random molecular movements in matter to be controlled. Between to poles, the MPF can cause an effect similar to gravity. The matter seems to have weight in a desired direction.
This is used to create artificial gravity in the Chrispin. This is maintained at Earth normal for the ship except for the Central Passageway which is maintained at half Earth normal and the lift which are at zero. Since the MPF controls the molecular motion, it is used to dampen inertia within the Chrispin so the occupants will feel no acceleration or motion.
Disrupter weapons use a variation of the MPF to cause the molecular attraction to loosen, causing matter to explode. A burst starts a chain reaction which self dampens at a rate dependent upon the intensity, level, and duration of the original burst. The Chrispin carries no heavy disrupter but does have hand disrupters for protection in hostile environments.
The spectroanalizer on the Chrispin uses a version of a disrupter. It is a very narrow beam at the highest level that causes the matter to break down to the base elements. It is a coaxial beam with the center disrupting and the outside keeping the disruption contained. It operates as a burst, with the outer beam closing to dampen the reaction preventing a possible chain reaction which could be serious at this high a level.
