Kauai, Hawaii

About 8 million years ago a volcano broke the surface of the ocean. This formed the beginning of what is now know as the Hawaiian Islands. Kauai is the oldest of these Islands. The volcanoes that formed it have been extinct for a long time. It is sometimes called the "Garden Island" because of its beauty. There are rugged coasts, awesome canyons, and beautiful flowers and trees. There are many waterfalls. Kauai has been used as the setting for many movies.

Sometimes lava tubes extend into the ocean. If a hole forms at the top, when the waves rush into the tube, water is shot out of the top. These are called "blowholes". When the waves are big sometimes the water can shoot as far as 100 feet into the air. kauai-01.jpg (12275 bytes)
